Biography
Dr Joseph Bell is a Specialist Orthodontist providing comprehensive orthodontic care at Coulthard General & Specialist Dental Practice. He treats children, teenagers and adults using a range of modern orthodontic techniques, including fixed and removable appliances and clear aligner treatment such as Invisalign.
Joseph graduated in Dentistry from the University of Sheffield in 2018 before completing specialist orthodontic training in Carlisle and Newcastle. He was awarded the Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Alongside his specialist training, he completed a Master’s degree in Clinical Research at Newcastle University, graduating with Distinction.
Joseph also works at Manchester Dental and Children’s Hospital, where he is undertaking further training towards becoming a Consultant in Orthodontics. His hospital practice involves the management of complex orthodontic cases, including patients requiring jaw surgery, patients with many missing teeth and those with cleft lip and palate. This experience allows him to bring a high level of specialist and multidisciplinary care.
His clinical and academic achievements have been recognised through several awards. These include the Nigel Carter Case Prize for the two best treated orthodontic cases within his training cohort, as well as the Geoffrey Fletcher Scholarship and TC White Travel Grant, which supported an elective visit to the Orthodontic Department at the University of Hong Kong.
Before specialising in orthodontics, Joseph gained broad hospital experience across Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Special Care Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry and Orthodontics. Early in his career, he was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons’ Faculty of General Dental Practitioners Outstanding Contribution to Foundation Training Award in recognition of his commitment to patient care.
Joseph has a strong academic and research background, with a particular interest in evidence-based orthodontic care and clinical education. He has published in dental journals, including the British Dental Journal, and has presented his clinical and research work nationally and internationally at meetings including the British Orthodontic Conference, European Orthodontic Conference and the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He is also actively involved in teaching and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education.
Joseph has also volunteered overseas with the dental charity Dentaid in Malawi and with Cambodia World Family, providing dental care in remote and underserved communities. In his spare time, he enjoys keeping active playing padel, golf and running. He is aiming to beat his Wilmslow 10k time next year!
